Situated in Tuscany, on a charming low hill, Arezzo is a fairly small city, and an agricultural centre in the region. Once an important Etruscan town and one of 12 cities in the Etruscan confederation, Arretium, as it was previously called, had a well-earned reputation. When the Romans arrived, Arezzo started developing into a centre for corallino ceramics producing. During the medieval times, the Ghibelline commune conflicted with Florence's Guelfs and the city's armies were defeated by Florence in the 13th century battle of Campaldino. Lately, Arezzo has received some international fame for being the setting of the Oscar-winning Benigni's "Life is beautiful."
